Since the seventies there are plans to build a modern tramway system in Toulon. But unlike in many other French tramway cities, Toulon suffers from long lasting zigzag-courses in transport policy. In the year 2000 the breakthrough of the project seemed to be achieved, and the rolling stock was already ordered. But then, after municipal elections the whole project was revised and the rolling stock order was withdrawn. A new project was launched afterwards, but in 2008 it was abolished again.
