Besancon plans to build an east-west tramway line including a short branch to the main station for completion in 2014. A second line to the planned TGV station on the outskirts may follow afterwards. With less than 180,000 inhabitants in the metropolitan area, Besancon will be the smallest French city with a new tramway system. Nonetheless, comparable ridership to other French systems is expected because of the band structure of the city.
