With only 46,000 inhabitants, Aubagne is the first medium-sized city in France which will insert a modern tramway. The first part of line 1 will be ready in 2014 and will operate with newly developed short Citadis Compact trams. It will be also the first free-of-charge urban tramway in the world. Because of political changes in 2014, the realisation of the planned extensions is unclear.
